About Us

Matt lives in Salem Oregon with Amy, his wife of 31 years.  We have lived in Oregon for 30 years, choosing it after researching all the states.  We have five grown kids and two grandsons.

 

Three years ago I started making gates to explore different ideas about hundred year old objects combined with new ones, and old styles with new parts, and so on.  I started collecting hardware from France, Canada, the U.S., Ukraine, Morocco, local vintage shops, and farms.

 

Having worked for years as a carpenter, the construction part was easy, but I had to experiment for a year and a half to determine what paints and finishes and processes actually worked.  I had found that in the great outdoors, over 90% of products made for the outdoors fail quickly.  Most of the rest fail within two or three years.  So even now I am testing different methods side-by-side to get the most durable results.

By making completed gates for sale, and with the help of people who have hired me to make custom gates, I have been able to experiment with many styles, plus with structural elements like windows that open set in a gate, a window within a door set in a gate, wooden bars, various bracing and hinge set-ups, and large double gates.  Thank you to those custom gate customers.
